COACHING TIPS TO AVOID HOLIDAY HASSLES:
The holidays will soon be upon us. For many it will mean festive get togethers with family and friends, while for others it will be a dreaded time of feeling alone. Sometimes we all forget that we have the freedom to make choices about how we celebrate and spend our time.
Preventing stress by shopping early, simplifying and keeping within your budget are not new concepts. But take a moment to look at the holiday season from a coaching perspective.
1. If you could design your holiday season exactly as you would like it to be, what would it look like for you? Write it down.
2. What (or who) is getting in the way of allowing that to happen?
3. What would be the worst thing that could happen if you decided to try it 'your way' this year?
4. What other options are available that would allow you and others to feel satisfied?
5. What would have to be added or eliminated in order to focus on the meaning of this holiday?
6. How can you use what you have (home, food, hospitality, etc.) to bring joy into
the life of someone who may be alone or feel isolated?
7. What can you stop doing that you wouldn't miss? Tradition dies hard, but sometimes deserves a decent burial.
8. If this is a year of "firsts" for you (first holiday season on your own, away from family or in a new city) think of some wonderful traditions that you would like to start.
9. If you choose to spend the holidays with people who you don't really connect with, remember it was your choice.
10. Think of what it would take to create great memories for you and those you love or people who will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
